Shruti Bharati - in Focus

Shruti Bharati is a multidisciplinary designer, based out of Gurugram, Haryana.
Her interests range from a variety of areas including commercial spatial design,
set design, product design, art installations, illustrations and photography.

We, at Silverline, had the pleasure of meeting and witnessing her art in a space
she calls home.

With a smile so contagious, and a twinkle in her eye, Shruti walks us through
some of her frequently asked and not so frequently asked questions.
Q. How does space affect the kind of work you create?

A. I feel that having a space you connect with, one which gives you a sense of
emotional and physical comfort provides a good environment and also a source of
inspiration. Spaces invoke imagination. Something as simple as the way the pens
are arranged on your desk could inspire you in unexpected ways!

Q. Does light make a difference? How are you influenced by it

A. Likewise, having the right light in the atmosphere is vital when you are
creating, especially when it's done by hand. Not only does it provide visual
accessibility, but could also impact the creative decisions you make, influencing
your will to create.
In fact it is such a strong influence for me that at times I push off painting
something to the next morning because my lamp just can't match up to the
comfort of natural light!
Q. A compliment/critique you hold close to your heart?

A. My father always has critical points about the work I do. Not only does
he help me look at things from another perspective, but also teaches me to be
open minded.
.
Q. We were going through your work and you seem to be drawn to flowers a lot.
We noticed how you describe growth in one of your projects through flowers
blooming. Tell us a little about your fascination with flowers.

A. I've always been drawn to nature. Not only is it a source of abundant
inspiration for form and colour, but the occurrences in nature, the phenomena, the
stages of growth and transformation, feel like they hold a million stories to be told.
.
Q. Not sure if we can ask an artist this, but favourite colours?

A. I love working with colours. Might be a cliched choice, but I am immensely
fascinated by the colours of the sunset sky. The palette in itself is a range of
infinite coalesce so beautifully together.
Q. Creative blocks. How do you go about it?

A. No sugarcoating - Creative blocks are extremely frustrating. When it's
happening, it sucks and everything feels disconnected. You spend your time
working on ideas which feel pointless. But like every creative professional, you
eventually figure your way out. What's beautiful is that the explorations and ideas
you rattled your brain with, more often than not could turn out to be the very
inspiration behind the birth of a new project.

Q. Do you have a fond memory that you associate with jewellery? Bonus if it's
Silverline, but just any jewellery memory would do too!

A. Wearing jewellery is one of those statements with which you can make
yourself feel more like you' and at the same time have the power to make you feel
like a completely different person if you wish to. It lets you be who you want to
present yourself to be. That's what jewellery means to me.
.
Q. What is your process like when you start creating something? Since you use
multiple mediums to create, how do you make these decisions, what drives you to
choose a certain form?

A. I am still new to the industry and have a lot to learn, but in the experience I
have had till now, each project has been unique in terms of the requirement, the
process and the outcome. I feel understanding what the project requires is the key
to creating.
The idea is to not just create something that looks good, but to achieve an
outcome that is relevant, effective and holistically enriches the experience of the design.
